What is Sangria?

It is a punch traditionally made with red wine, fresh fruits, and a splash of brandy or another spirit. It is often sweetened with sugar or fruit juices. Over time, variations have emerged, including with white wine, sparkling wine, and even non-alcoholic versions. The beauty of it all lies in its adaptability, allowing you to tailor it to your taste preferences and the seasonal fruits available.

History of Sangria

Sangria has its roots in Spain, with a history that dates back centuries. The drink is believed to have originated in the region of Andalusia, where wine has been produced since ancient times. The name comes from the Spanish word "sangre," which means blood, a reference to the deep red color of the traditional drink.

The earliest versions of this concoction were simple mixtures of red wine, water, and spices, often consumed by farmers and laborers to refresh themselves on hot days. Over time, the recipe evolved, and fruits were added to enhance the flavor and nutritional value. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons became popular additions, along with seasonal fruits that varied by region.

The drink began to gain international popularity in the 1960s and 1970s, especially following the Spanish Expo at the Worlds Fair in 1964, which showcased the drink to a broader audience. Its refreshing taste and vibrant presentation made it a favorite in bars and restaurants around the world.

Today, sangria is enjoyed in various styles, with recipes incorporating a wide range of wines, fruit, and even flavored liqueurs. While the red wine version remains the classic rendition, white wine and sparkling sangria have also become popular variations. Regardless of the type, sangria continues to be a symbol of Spanish culture and hospitality, perfect for gatherings and celebrations.
