The Art of Wintering & The Northern Way of Life

If you look out across our vineyard today, it looks still. To the untrained eye, the vines might even look asleep. But beneath the frost, something vital is happening.

The vines are wintering.

In our fast-paced world, "wintering" has become a lost art. We are taught to be "on" all year round—to push, to produce, and to grow. But nature knows better. In the North, we understand that without the cold, there is no harvest. Without the rest, there is no bloom.

The Art of Wintering with Rolling Forks Vineyards, Glenwood, Minnesota

What is Wintering?

Wintering is the intentional act of slowing down. It is a period of pulling inward to preserve your energy, a necessary retreat from the high-octane demands of the sun-drenched months. To the casual observer, a winter landscape looks empty, but beneath the snow, nature is performing its most vital work.

Just as our grapes—like those in our Three Ladies Collection—are specifically bred to withstand the harsh Minnesota freeze, we too must learn to find strength in the stillness. In the vineyard, this process is called acclimation. The vines don’t fight the frost; they adapt to it. They stop reaching upward and instead move their sugars and nutrients down into their core. They harden. They survive. They prepare.

In our own lives, wintering is the "Northern Way of Life." It is the conscious shift from the frantic, outward energy of the harvest to the quiet, restorative glow of the hearth. It is a time to stop measuring ourselves by our productivity and start measuring ourselves by our presence.

When we embrace wintering, we choose to see the snow not as an obstacle or a burden, but as a protective blanket—a natural permission slip from the earth to stay a little longer, talk a little deeper, and breathe a little easier. It is in this cold, quiet space that we find the clarity and rest required to bloom again when the thaw finally comes.

Wine: The Warmth of the Season

Wine is perhaps the ultimate companion to this restorative season. While summer wines are about celebration and movement, winter wines are about contemplation.

There is a unique magic in the contrast of a cold landscape and a warming glass of wine. When you pour a glass of Forte’ of the North, our smooth and balanced Port, you aren't just drinking a dessert wine. You are engaging in a ritual. The deep colors and rich aromas are a sensory counterbalance to the white, crisp world outside.

When we "winter" with a glass of wine, we are practicing hygge—that famous Danish concept of coziness and soul-comfort. We are creating a sanctuary within our own homes.

Three Picks for the Coldest Months

While our summer days are for crisp sips on the patio, winter invites a deeper, more thoughtful exploration of the cellar.

To help you master the art of wintering, we’ve selected three bottles from our portfolio that serve as the perfect companions to a roaring fire and a slow pace.

1. Forte’ of the North | The Fireside Classic

There is no wine more suited for a snowy evening than our signature Port-style wine. Crafted in the traditional Solera style and matured in oak for five years, Forte’ of the North is a masterclass in patience. Fortified with brandy distilled from our very own wine, it is a true estate expression from grape to glass.

Why it’s perfect for winter: Imagine the deep mahogany color in your glass reflecting the glow of a fireplace. Each sip offers profound layers of dried fruit, toasted nuts, and nuanced spices with an opulent, enduring finish. It is the ultimate "slow-sipping" wine—designed to be savored while the wind howls outside.

2. Vintner’s Reserve | The Hearty Companion

This bold, complex red is a testament to the skill of our winemaking team and the richness of our soil. After a careful blending process to ensure a robust structure, it was matured at length in oak barrels. This time in wood allows the wine to develop sophisticated notes of vanilla, warm spice, and a hint of toast.

Why it’s perfect for winter: Winter is the season of the "hearth," and this wine is the liquid equivalent of a wool blanket. Its bold character and oak-driven spice profile hold up beautifully against the rich, savory flavors of winter stews and roasts. It provides a sense of grounding warmth that makes a cold night feel like an occasion.

3. Prairie Edge | The Bright Winter Light

While winter often calls for reds, a bright, mineral-driven white like Prairie Edge is essential for balancing the season’s "heaviness." This wine is a crisp reflection of our landscape, offering a refreshing acidity that cuts through the richness of holiday cream sauces and buttery winter dishes.

Why it’s perfect for winter: Think of Prairie Edge as the brilliant winter sun reflecting off a fresh snowfall—bright, clean, and invigorating. It brings a necessary spark of light to the table, proving that a wine can be both refreshing and cozy. It’s the perfect choice for a winter brunch or a light dinner by candlelight.

How to Practice the Art of Wintering This Year:

  1. Embrace the Low Light: Swap the overhead lights for candles or the glow of a fireplace. Let your body adjust to the shorter days.

  2. Savor the Slow Pour: Don’t rush the glass. Notice the legs of the wine, the way the aroma changes as it breathes, and the way the warmth spreads.

  3. Read, Don't Scroll: Trade the screen for a book. Pair a complex wine like our Lady of the Prairie with a story that takes its time.

  4. Visit the "Wintering Hole": Our tasting room was designed to be a place of refuge. When the wind howls across the ridges, there is a seat waiting for you here.

This January, we invite you to stop fighting the season. Don’t worry about "New Year, New You." Instead, lean into the "Wintering You." Rest, restore, and let the quiet do its work.

We’ll have the wine ready when you need a little warmth.
